漲跌停板主要的作用在於穩定股價，避免股價在一日之內漲跌幅過大，致使股價背離真實價格。在台灣，證管會規定一日之內股價的漲跌幅不能超過7﹪，若股價下跌到價格的7﹪也不能再跌，稱作跌停板。
