黃金外匯儲備或官方準備，其意義有廣義與狹義之分，就廣義而言，依國際貨幣基金會的定義，外匯準備的構成?容有：(1)政府所持有的黃金；(2)政府所持有的可兌換外幣；(3)國際貨幣基金的準備頭寸；(4)特別提款權。此即一個國際收支平衡表?的銀行體國外資產淨額的累積金額。狹義的外匯準備則不包括黃金及握有的外幣現鈔等項。
